Boycott Experts Exchange
June 16th, 2008 | Published in Rants
That is the anthem.
How many times have I been trying to find a solution to a Microsoft code issue only to get Experts Exchange in the top 3 or 4 results and I accidently click on the link before I realize what it is.
First off – the web page is terrible. There is a GIGANTIC header on that page. It’s got to be at least 2 megs. It locks up my browser for a few seconds just trying to load the ginormous graphic. I mean – geez – its like 500 pixels tall. It takes up almost the whole screen.
Then you get to scroll down and read someone who is asking the EXACT same question you need an answer to, and you get excited because you are about to end your quest for answers with triumph – and then.
DENIED.
You have to buy a membership to view the answer.
This makes me sick. I mean how many message boards, forums, blogs and whitepapers are out there for free, and these guys think they can charge for it? That’s insulting. No really – it is. What makes you think that you can charge for the same information that everyone else has spent hours figuring out. What have you done here? Simply facilitated the proliferation of information by making a message board. It’s not like you invented the internet Al.
For all those of us out there who strive to solve everyday problems with code, have some dignity and do not go to the Experts Exchange. Keep looking, keep trying, and when you find the answer – BLOG ON IT. Or at least post a link to the answer in as many forums as you can find.
My goal is for Experts Exchange to become a wasteland of VB6 and Access developers.
